At least, judging from the books, notes, and echoes of past conversations that you are able to find around.

Understanding how they work is vital if you want to move forward, since some are blocking your path.

External knowledge can help you, but it is not needed and the game will always give all the tools and knowledge needed to understand and solve the puzzles, and you are never required to brute-force puzzles.
